Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

Dateline San Francisco - Controversial singer/songwriter Jallen Rix is being true to form with the release of a secret web page that shows off his body - all of it! "I'm a person who's not big on clothes," says Rix, "Since much of my career is public and there are so many places I enjoy going without clothes - beaches, backyards, hiking, etc. - I figure I'd beat the Poperatzy to the punch."

Rix believes the public eye has a double standard. "American society is getting more comfortable with women disrobing, but for men it's 'hide the pee-pee at all cost.' I find wisdom and humor in the saying: 'The world's problems could be solved if its leaders held their meetings in the buff.' It's a pretty funny thought but you can't miss the idea of vulnerability. So in that vein, I have nothing to hide."

Rix is tired of the negative views American culture generates about the body and sexuality. "Most people are uncomfortable with enjoying sexuality in public - kissing, hugging, nudity, even holding hands. At a young age I didn't understand the double standard. We are to love each other but don't show it publicly. Many Jr High and High schools have done away with showers in gym class because kids (and more likely their parents) are uncomfortable with the idea of them being harmlessly naked in the same room. Despite the odor it must generate, what kind of message does that say about our bodies? Covering up the issue betrays us because it reveals our fear and sends the false message that the body is naturally bad and should be hidden. I choose not to be dictated by fear in this manner. I'll not avoid the issue. With this web page, I want to admit my sexuality with pictures. Besides, it's empowering and fun as well! I'm so flattered that friends and photographers have wanted to take pictures of my body. Someday, as my body ages, I'll be able to look back with pride thinking I looked pretty good!"

Our society further confuses the issue by using and glorifying sexuality for the purposes of making money, like in jeans and cologne commercials. "Only seeing the natural body in ads and erotica sets the standard on an obsessively high level. I feel like I can't take my shirt off unless I've worked out or look a certain way. There's nothing wrong with keeping my body in shape, but there's nothing wrong with the body, period! It's as if we attack the victim - our body - rather than scrutinize the bad ways in which we treat it."

Does this mean Jallen believes we should fight the exploitation of sex and the body in advertising? "No, that will only send another negative message about sex and the body. Besides, what a waste of energy to try and stop something that we have the freedom to do as Americans. Instead, if the natural body, nudity, sexuality, and public affection were more commonplace then there would be less exploitation of it. The titillation would defuse and we'd think much better of ourselves. I know that most people would be uncomfortable with that idea, but you really have to think about it: 'Oh! darn, there's more love and acceptance for ourselves and others on a public level' - what's so bad about that?"

Yet, this page is in a secret spot on his personal website. "What can I say? I too still am dealing with my shame. But this page is a step in the right direction for me. I guess where we are as a culture still makes me afraid that if this page is as accessible as the rest of my site, it will tend to upstage everything else. We're moving in the right direction, though. More people are getting comfortable with their God-given gift of sexuality and that sometimes means looking to others as well as doffing our own clothes - regardless of our looks."
